A message from Dr. Cary

June 2018

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Community,

The warm days of summer are here. We spend time with family and friends basking in the bright sunlit days and relaxing in beautiful summer eves. Each year that goes by is a reminder of the growth that has taken place and the goals that were achieved.

I will leave Marple Newtown School District with fond memories of the work we did together. You were a great support to me. Parents and Guardians, you are advocates for your children and should continue to be that. Students, you have the best parents, teachers, and administrators who truly care about you and your education.

Enjoy the summer break.

I wish all of you the best today and always.

Summer Reading Lists 2018

Dear MNSD Families-

The purpose of summer reading this year is to promote student choice. In an effort to support our students’ development of critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, students must be given the opportunity to take ownership of their reading choices. There are suggested titles that provide choice, as well as, opportunity for exposure to interact with texts that will assist in developing their understanding, perspective, and appreciation for the people, places, and ideas that comprise their world.

The MNHS link provides both required titles and the opportunity for choice. Please note that this list also contains titles for all content areas and the related assignments.

The PHMS links include the rubrics which will be used to score the summer reading assignments so students can use them as a guide for completion.

Proposed Field Renovation

The Marple Newtown School Board will be considering a motion at its May 22, 2018 regular meeting to rescind its January 23, 2018 approval of Option G for the athletic field renovation project, and to select Option A.  Please click on each option to see a rendering of the project options.

Academic Calendar 2018-2019

Our Academic Calendar for School Year 2018-2019 is on the website (under the header ‘News, Events and Calendar’). It was recommended by district administration and approved last evening at the Regular Board Meeting.

You will notice that the calendar has 183 school days for all students K-12.  Our make-up days are listed in the lower left corner.  It is our intention to use these make-up days in the order listed on the calendar as school closures occur, barring any unanticipated considerations.

The district also has adopted a modified spring break schedule for next year.  After careful consideration, administration recommended this calendar version, which includes a shorter spring break and an earlier year end, because it has several benefits.  These benefits include allowing for more meaningful instructional time and more flexibility in scheduling of PSSA’s, with the goal of improving student achievement and reducing student stress relating to testing.

For example, the calendar allows the district to utilize the days before and after Spring Break for testing, giving the students a rest between testing sessions, and therefore a less stressful testing schedule. Please note that the testing schedule is specific to the individual school as long as it falls within the window from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
