Summer Reading Lists 2018

Dear MNSD Families-

The purpose of summer reading this year is to promote student choice. In an effort to support our students’ development of critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, students must be given the opportunity to take ownership of their reading choices. There are suggested titles that provide choice, as well as, opportunity for exposure to interact with texts that will assist in developing their understanding, perspective, and appreciation for the people, places, and ideas that comprise their world.

The MNHS link provides both required titles and the opportunity for choice. Please note that this list also contains titles for all content areas and the related assignments.

The PHMS links include the rubrics which will be used to score the summer reading assignments so students can use them as a guide for completion.

Academic Calendar 2018-2019

Our Academic Calendar for School Year 2018-2019 is on the website (under the header ‘News, Events and Calendar’). It was recommended by district administration and approved last evening at the Regular Board Meeting.

You will notice that the calendar has 183 school days for all students K-12.  Our make-up days are listed in the lower left corner.  It is our intention to use these make-up days in the order listed on the calendar as school closures occur, barring any unanticipated considerations.

The district also has adopted a modified spring break schedule for next year.  After careful consideration, administration recommended this calendar version, which includes a shorter spring break and an earlier year end, because it has several benefits.  These benefits include allowing for more meaningful instructional time and more flexibility in scheduling of PSSA’s, with the goal of improving student achievement and reducing student stress relating to testing.

For example, the calendar allows the district to utilize the days before and after Spring Break for testing, giving the students a rest between testing sessions, and therefore a less stressful testing schedule. Please note that the testing schedule is specific to the individual school as long as it falls within the window from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Ten Basic Financial Steps for Special Needs Caregivers Workshop

An Important Message from Dr. Cary

Very recently, some information has appeared on social media concerning highly disturbing communications and on-line posts apparently made by a now-deceased resident of Hazelton, PA to randomly-targeted and innocent school students and their families throughout the United States, including two families within our District.  This now-deceased Hazelton resident has no other connection with our District.

At the recommendation of the Executive Director of our Delaware County Intermediate Unit, we are sharing with you updated information that she received yesterday afternoon from the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office....

Important Information for Students Entering Grade 7
The Pennsylvania Department of Health requires all children entering grade 7 to have the following:
  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis, (Tdap)
  • 1 dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)
Please note that we must have this documentation prior to the first day of school or your child will not be permitted to start the school year.
Please request documentation of the vaccines from your primary care provider and return it to your school nurse.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

Immunizations are available at the:

MNSD Email Communications

The Marple Newtown School District employs multiple methods of technology to communicate with its students, families, and community members.  Email has proven to be a highly effective and efficient form of communication for the district however, it has come to our attention that not all our email communications have been received.  This is most likely due to the safeguards that your internet and or email provider has put into place specifically, Anti-SPAM filters.

To ensure the proper and timely delivery of district email messages, we are asking that you “whitelist” or “allow” the domain and email address in your email account.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter and helping us serve our community.

March 28, 2018

Dear Parents, Students, and Community,

Please join me in congratulating Mr. John Beltrante as the new principal of Marple Newtown High School effective July 1, 2018. Mr. Beltrante admirably served in this district for the past twenty-two years.

First, he served as a teacher at the high school, then as disciplinarian until he moved to assistant principal at Paxon Hollow.  Following that he became assistant principal at the high school and after a successful tenure of five years, he was selected for the position of principal at Worrall Elementary school.

While at Worrall he received the Keystone Award for Academic Excellence, The Snag in the River Award, and The Title I Distinguished School Award. In 2013, he was part of the Governor’s Award for Marple Newtown High School.

The Marple Newtown School District is pleased to announce that it has successfully negotiated contracts with both the Marple Newtown Education Association (MNEA) and the Marple Newtown Educational Support Professional Association (MNESPA).  These new labor agreements run through June 30, 2020.

The District and the MNSD labor groups worked cooperatively and determinedly over the past several months to reach agreements.  Their efforts resulted in a balanced compromise between the desires of each association and the continued economic challenges of the District.  Moving forward, teachers, educational support personnel, administration and members of the MNSD School Board may continue to focus on the educational mission that our students and community deserve.

Message from Dr. Cary

March 19, 2018

Dear Parents and Students,

It will be spring in just a few days! The winter will soon be behind us and we can look forward to warmer days ahead. Over the last few months while I was recuperating, I heard of the many good things happening in the district and I was so pleased.

I’d like to thank the School Board, Mr. Joe Driscoll, the cabinet, administrators, teachers, and staff for their efforts during my absence.

I’d like to thank our students for making us proud each day. I was especially proud of our high school students on the day of the Walk for our Lives event.

I wish you a warm spring recess and joyful holidays.

Make-up Days during Spring Break

Dear Marple Newtown Families,

I know that this winter has been difficult for both families and school operations.

As we continue through the month of March, the district must reassess the academic calendar.  Meeting student instructional days is a priority. As indicated on the school calendar, days over spring break will be used for make-up days.

To meet the required 180 days of school set by the state, our schools will be in session on Monday, March 26, Tuesday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 28, 2018. If there are additional school closures, the district will reevaluate the school calendar at that time.

Having the additional days of instruction prior to the PSSA testing is a benefit for students.  We know that this change may effect prior plans for families.  If your child or children will be absent during those three days, please speak with your child’s principal.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.

Title I Parents Meeting Invitation

On Tuesday afternoon (09.26.17), our District’s 9th grade boys soccer team played an away match against Conestoga High School.   One of our students on this team wears religious headwear in observation of his Sikh faith.

Early in the match, the PIAA referee assigned by PIAA to officiate the match informed our student that he was not permitted to wear his headwear while playing.

Our team’s soccer coach, Mike Snow, responded to the referee that our student wore his headwear for religious purposes.

Nevertheless, the referee indicated that our student needed to remove his headwear, and if he refused to do so, our student would not be permitted to play in the match.

Coach Snow vociferously objected to the referee’s ruling regarding our student’s headwear.  Despite Coach Snow’s strenuous advocacy for the right of our student to appropriately wear religious headwear, the referee did not reverse his ruling. Therefore, our student was relegated to the sidelines for the match.

Coach Snow immediately telephoned Athletic Director Chris Gicking to alert him to this issue.  AD Gicking immediately and strenuously advocated for our student, including with his contact at PIAA, in an effort to permit our student to play in this match.  AD Gicking also communicated with the opposing team’s athletic director and his assistant, who joined with our District in strong agreement that our student should be permitted to play in the match while wearing his religious headwear.  Unfortunately, AD Gicking’s efforts were to no avail, and therefore our student remained relegated to the sidelines for the remainder of the match.

New PA Immunization Regulations as of August 1, 2017

Parents will have a much shorter time to provide proof of immunization due to these new regulations.  Previously, families had 8 months to provide proof of immunization to the school.  The regulations require most proof of immunization to be provided on or before the first day of school or risk their child’s exclusion from school.  The goal is to ensure that children in school are adequately protected from preventable diseases.

Children in ALL grades (K-12) need the following immunizations for attendance:

  • 4 doses of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis
  • 4 doses of polio (4th dose on or after 4th birthday AND at least 6 months after previous dose
  • 2 doses of measles, mumps, rubella
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B
  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity

7th grade ADDITIONAL requirements:

  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap)
  • 1 dose meningococcal vaccine (MCV)

12th grade ADDITIONAL requirements:

  • 2nd dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)  If the first dose was given at 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required.

Exemptions to school law for immunizations:

  • Medical reasons
  • Religious beliefs
  • Philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction

If a child is exempt, he or she may be removed from school during an outbreak/health emergency

Additional information regarding immunization requirements may be found by visiting the PA Department of Health website at

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony

Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 9 a.m.

Dress Code

The promotion ceremony is a special event for our 8th grade students and their family.  We ask for parent’s cooperation guiding their child to dress appropriately for the occasion.  We suggest boys wear a collared or polo style shirt and neat pants or slacks and girls wear pants or capris or an appropriate length dress or skirt.  Please refer to the dress code policy below for more specific guidelines

Below is a guideline for student dress.

All School Dress Code Policy is in effect except for shoes.

No shower shoes or flip flops can be worn; slip on dress shoes can be worn.

The following is a list of guidelines for this dress code policy:

  • All clothing shall be neat, clean and in proper repair.
  • Students shall not wear midriffs, tube tops, halter tops, or any tops not covering the shoulders (a cover up or shawl can be worn to cover the shoulders).
  • Garments with exposed midriffs, tube tops, halter tops, or which are inappropriately low cut are not acceptable.
  • All shirts must be long enough that they can be worn tucked in.
  • Form fitting shorts or pants worn as outer garments (e.g. elastic, spandex) are not acceptable.
  • Clothing must cover all undergarments.
