Project PRIDE — Communication with Students

Principal’s Student Advisory Council

Each month student representatives from each classroom, grades 1-5, meet with Mrs. Busch to share ideas, ask questions and discuss concerns. Class meetings are held before the council meets. The council representatives bring clipboards with notes from these meetings. They return to class with responses and information to share with their class during the next class meeting.

The council members are selected by their classmates following a discussion of the responsibilities of the job and the skills required. They must be willing to meet during lunch and recess to present their classmates’ ideas and questions and report to their classmates.

Our first meeting was held on October 12. This month the representatives provided numerous solutions for problems on the playground and reminders for the cafeteria and indoor recess. The students suggested:

  • Discuss important rules and procedures with their classmates.
  • Do not eat while riding the bus, walking in the halls, or playing on the playground.
  • No lollipops, hard candy or cough drops. You could choke.
  • Remember to clean the table before you go to recess. If you spill something ask an adult to help you clean it up. Some of the 4 th & 5 th grade students want to help solve this problem and created a “clean team” that will help clean up the tables before going to recess.
  • Only use the Loomis games, balls and other toys at recess. Do not bring balls or games from home. This prevents arguments and worry about lost or broken items.
  • Follow the rules for using jump ropes and hoola hoops. Check the playground map for the locations to play games or jump rope. Remember to walk around groups playing games and do not run through the middle of a game.
  • A reminder to all students to use respectful language.
  • See the attached playground map that was designed by our last year’s Principal’s Advisory.

Principal’s, Counselor's & Teachers' Mailboxes

Students can communicate concerns “tell” by writing a note to Mrs. Busch or the Counselor or any Teacher, and put it in the mailbox located in the office next to the attendance basket.

Dear LEO Newsletter

LEO is the name of the Loomis Leopard. LEO represents our school code or set of expectations that you see on posters throughout the school. LEO means Learning, Effort, and Outstanding Performance. At the end of each marking period, LEO’s helpers, the Loomis Staff, help LEO give recognition awards for effort, respectful behavior and outstanding performance. Students and staff also send questions to LEO. Students help LEO answer important questions in a newsletter.

The following current editions of Dear Leo are available online: December 2005 | March 2006

Some examples are:

LEO wants to know: What are you doing to keep the cafeteria clean?

How do you ask to be included in a game?

What does Respect mean to you?

If someone is not following the rules of the game what should you do?
