MARKING SYSTEM

Grades for full year courses are as follows:

First Marking Period............................................................................1/5 or 20%
Second Marking Period.......................................................................1/5 or 20%
Mid-Year Examination........................................................................1/10 or 10%
Third Marking Period...........................................................................1/5 or 20%
Fourth Marking Period.........................................................................1/5 or 20%
Final Examination................................................................................1/10 or 10%

Final Grade = [(2 x 1st MP) + (2 x 2nd MP) + (2 x 3rd MP) + (2 x 4th MP) + Mid Term Exam + Final Exam/Act] ÷ 10

Grades for semester courses are calculated as follows:

Our marking system is as follows:   

  • Passing Grades  -  70-100
  • Failing Grades   -  50-69*

*Teacher may record a grade lower than 50 only
after sufficient warning has been provided to the
student and his/her parent or guardian and the
performance of the particular student is approved
by the administration, and

Other grade designations include:  
P = Pass 
F = Fail
WP = Withdraw Passing
WF = Withdraw Failing  
I = Incomplete 
M = Medical, 
N = No Grade

HONOR ROLL

Requirements for honor roll membership are as follows:

Distinguished Honor Roll:

  • A grade of 92 or higher in all subjects which meet at least five (5) periods each week.
  • A grade of 84 or higher in one subject which meets less than five (5) periods each week.

Regular Honor Roll:

  • A grade of 84 or higher in all subjects which meet at least five (5) periods each week.
  • A grade of 76 or higher in one subject which meets less than five (5) periods each week.  

CLASS RANK

Class rank is determined at the end of the eleventh grade and after the first semester of the 12 th grade by ranking the students by the average of all grades earned in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. The average is based on all final grades earned in half credit courses, one credit courses and courses giving more than one credit, with the exception of Band, Choir, and Orchestra.

paw CERTIFICATES OF PROFICIENCY and DISTINCTION

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has established academic standards for all public school students. Marple Newtown High School is committed to providing its students with the opportunity, resources and assistance in attaining these standards. The Commonwealth has also developed a series of assessments which are administered to students in grade 11 for reading, math and writing. The Commonwealth has established a system to recognize the performance of students on the PSSA. Therefore, a Pennsylvania Certificate of Proficiency will be granted to graduates and noted on a student’s transcript if that student attains a score at the proficient level or better on State assessments in reading, writing and math administered in grade 11. A Pennsylvania Certificate of Distinction will be granted to graduates and noted on a student’s transcript if that student attains a score at the advanced level of proficiency on State assessments in reading, writing and math administered in grade 11.
