COURSE DESCRIPTIONS — SCIENCE

The mission of the Marple Newtown School District Science Department is to provide all students with a program of study that will enable them to acquire the knowledge and skills to become scientifically literate citizens and to develop an understanding and appreciation of the role of science and technology in society. This program includes courses in Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Earth Science Courses:

4410 HONORS EARTH SCIENCE
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and meet eligibility standards.
Year 1.0 credit Grade 9
4420 EARTH SCIENCE
Year 1.0 credit Grade 9
4430 CONCEPTS OF EARTH SCIENCE Year 1.0 credit Grade 9

Earth Science is the study of the earth and the universe of which it is a part. This includes the study of the earth’s surface and interior (geology), the earth’s atmosphere (meteorology), the earth’s oceans (oceanography), and the movement of the earth through space (astronomy), and the use and conservation of natural resources in the environment(ecology).

Biology Courses:

4510 HONORS BIOLOGY
Prerequisite: 4410 or 4420 and teacher recommendation.
Year 1.4 credit Grades 9, 10
4520 BIOLOGY
Prerequisite: an Earth Science course
Year 1.4 credit Grade 10
4530 CONCEPTS OF BIOLOGY
Prerequisite: an Early Science Course
Year 1.0 credit Grade 10

Biology is the study of life. This includes the study of animal and plant structure, function, and behavior, as well as the study of living things which cannot be classified as either plants or animals. Topics from genetics, ecology, physiology, evolution, and molecular biology are included.

Chemistry Courses:

4610 HONORS CHEMISTRY
*Prerequisite: 4510 or 4520 and teacher recommendation.
Year 1.4 credits Grades 10, 11
4620 CHEMISTRY
Prerequisite: a Biology Course
Year 1.4 credits Grade 11
4630 CONCEPTS OF CHEMISTRY
Prerequisite: a Biology Course
Year 1.0 credit Grade 11

Chemistry is the study of the structure of matter and the changes it undergoes, using the atom as the basic unit of matter. This includes not only the study of the physical and chemical properties of matter, but also explanations for these properties. Topics which are studied include atomic structure and bonding, chemical formulas, the mole concept, the phases of matter, solutions, energy and energy changes, the rates of chemical reactions, and oxidation-reduction.

Physics Courses:

4710* HONORS PHYSICS
Prerequisite: 4610 or 4620 and completion of honors class application.
Recommended: Algebra II (can be taken at the same time)

Year 1.4 credit Grades 11, 12

4720 PHYSICS
Prerequisite: a Chemistry course
Recommended: Algebra II (can be taken at the same time)

Year 1.4 credits Grade 12
4730 CONCEPTS OF PHYSICS
Prerequisite: a Chemistry course
Recommended: Geometry (can be taken at the same time)
Year 1.0 credit Grade 12

Physics is the study of matter, energy, and the interactions between them. Unifying fundamental concepts are developed which tie together seemingly unrelated observations. Topics which are studied include motion, energy, sound, gravity, electricity, magnetism, optics, and electromagnetism.

Advanced Placement Courses

4515* AP BIOLOGY Year 1.4 credits Grades 11, 12

A course covering advanced topics from Biology. All students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the College Board's Advanced Placement Exam.

Prerequisites: 4510 or 4520, and 4610 or 4620 and teacher recommendation and meet eligibility standards.

4615* AP CHEMISTRY Year 1.4 credits Grade 12

A course covering advanced topics from Chemistry. All students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the College Board's Advanced Placement Exam.

Prerequisites: 4610 or 4620, and 4710 or 4720 (can be taken at the same time), teacher recommendation, and meet eligibility standards.
