General Information: Policies

It is the philosophy of Marple Newtown High School that a student should have a program of studies which will permit him/her to function effectively not only in his community but also in all society. It is with this thought in mind that the high school provides students with a great degree of flexibility and individualization in the planning of their educational career. Other than the required courses stated in the section marked Graduation Requirements, a student's schedule is an individual matter. Honors/Advanced Placement- appropriate for students who intend to attend college and desire a more challenging and rigorous course of study College Preparatory- appropriate for all students who intend to attend college Concepts- appropriate for students who intend to continue their education in some way other than a traditional four year college degree program or immediately begin a job/career. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has established academic standards for all public school students. Marple Newtown High School is committed to providing its students with the opportunity, resources and assistance in attaining these standards. The Commonwealth has also developed a series of assessments which are administered to students in grade 11 for reading, math and writing. The Commonwealth has established a system to recognize the performance of students on the PSSA. Therefore, a Pennsylvania Certificate of Proficiency will be granted to graduates and noted on a student’s transcript if that student attains a score at the proficient level or better on State assessments in reading, writing and math administered in grade 11. A Pennsylvania Certificate of Distinction will be granted to graduates and noted on a student’s transcript if that student attains a score at the advanced level of proficiency on State assessments in reading, writing and math administered in grade 11. |
