DELAWARE COUNTY TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL
Career and Technical Education
The Marple Newtown School District participates in career and technical education at DCTS. Each course is an extension of the high school program and elective credits towards high school graduation will be awarded. The courses are scheduled on a half-day basis.
Mission Statement: The Delaware County Technical Schools are preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s opportunities by meaningful career training and a foundation for lifelong learning with support from business, industry and the community.
Health and Human Services Cluster
Medical Careers - This advanced placement course is recommended for the college-bound senior who is interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare profession. In this program, the hospital becomes the classroom. This is a partnership with Crozer-Keystone Health System and Taylor Hospital. Students will be given a rigorous academic curriculum as well as rotating through all of the hospital’s departments as part of their clinical rotation.
Health Occupations - This course includes anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, nutrition, medical procedures, emergency and clinical care, and health care issues. Clinical education is an integral part of the program.
Cosmetology - The Cosmetology Program is a three-year standards-based education program. The 1250 hours required for this course are earned when a score of 80% or above is achieved for each individual unit, which includes both theoretical and hands-on training. Students learn haircutting, coloring, manicuring, facials, hairstyling, and shampoo techniques and treatments.
Culinary Arts and Hospitality - Culinary Arts and Hospitality prepares students for success in our nation's number one employer, the food service and hospitality industry. Students are taught food preparation, dining service, inventory control, safety, sanitation and management skills. Our students also learn food nutrition, healthy cooking, equipment identification, use of hand tools and culinary vocabulary. We are the only high school Culinary Arts program in this part of Pennsylvania to be certified by the American Culinary Federation.
Early Childhood Education - The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program prepares students to work with young children in a variety of settings that require an understanding of how children grow, learn and develop. The curriculum is aligned with the National Child Care Association's core of 15 "Professional Abilities."
Emergency and Protective Services - The Emergency and Protective Services (EPS) program offers a comprehensive public safety education to students interested in pursuing a career or volunteering in the emergency medical, law enforcement, fire, security, industrial safety or emergency management services.
Technology Cluster
Applied Engineering Technology Academy - The Applied Engineering Technology Career Pathways Program is an innovative educational model, which allows a student to earn up to 16 credits while in their junior and senior years of high school. Students entering this program will actually be dually enrolled in Delaware County Community College (DCCC) while in high school and will be entitled to all of the services of DCCC.
Business Administration and Technical Support - The Business Administration and Technical Support (BATS) program is intended for students who want to explore the many areas of business to determine a future career path. This highly individualized program introduces students to topics that are essential to learning how businesses function.
Computer Integration and Support - Computer Integration and Support students learn to install, repair and maintain commercial and personal computing systems. The program includes units on tools, equipment identification, critical thinking, communication, employability, writing and math.
Computer Networking Support - This course is designed to provide a broad background in the nature of electricity, the operation and application of electric circuits, and the physics of electric current flow.
Interactive Multimedia and Design - Interactive Multimedia is a computer graphics program that introduces students to technology-based desktop publishing, multimedia design and production skills. Students learn the concepts of color and design and their use in computer-based graphic design. They also learn animation, sound, video and graphics editing in the multimedia class.
Power and Transportation Cluster
Automotive Technology - DCTS has the distinction of being among a small number of schools and colleges to be selected to participate in the AYES program, a partnership with General Motors, Daimler Chrysler, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Subaru, Toyota, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes Benz corporations. This program gives DCTS students a competitive edge by allowing them to work directly on new cars with technicians experienced in the field and at dealerships.
Collision Repair Technology - DCTS's Collision Repair Technology course is based on an occupational analysis of the auto body field and reflects the job requirements of I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) and the Automotive Collision Technology standards. Using state-of-the-art equipment, students are taught MIG welding/cutting, metal repair, corrosion protection, masking, refinishing, undercoating, unibody inspection and detailing.
Materials and Inventory Control - Materials and Inventory Control introduces students to the distribution service industry. The course curriculum prepares students to work in distribution centers, warehouses, and supply rooms.
Construction Cluster
Landscape and Greenhouse Operations – As a member of the Landscape & Greenhouse Operations class, students learn the principles and skills that lead to successful careers in the fields of landscape design/maintenance, nursery and greenhouse production/operations, and floral arts.
Building Trades - Practical experience and classroom training prepares students enrolled in the Building Trades program to find employment in the construction field or enter a post-secondary institution. Students are taught carpentry, masonry, plumbing, roofing, drywall application, painting and framing/finishing.
Carpentry - The Carpentry program prepares students for employment in residential home remodeling and light commercial construction industries. The curriculum covers the use of hand and power tools, blueprint reading, estimating and scheduling of construction operations. Students are introduced to concrete form building, placing, reinforcing and finishing.
Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - This course prepares students to apply the technical knowledge and skills necessary to install, repair and maintain commercial, industrial and residential heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The course is taught in compliance with the standards established by the National Association for Testing Excellence (NATE) and the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA).
Industrial and Residential Electricity - The Industrial and Residential Electricity program introduces students to the basis concepts of residential and commercial wiring. Students install circuits, switches, conductors, circuit breakers and other electrical devices. Skills are taught in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) industry standards.
Articulations and Dual Enrollments – Students attending DCTS can earn college credit while in high school as part of the Tech Prep Program. DCTS has agreements with the Delaware County Community College, Penn College of Technology, Harcum College as well as other post-secondary institutions that give credit for technical courses.
Advanced Certifications – DCTS students have many opportunities to achieve advanced career certifications before they graduate from high school. For example, Health Occupation students can earn Nurses’ Aide, Computer students can earn A+, Network, MOS, MCSE I, and Emergency and Protective Services students can achieve CPR and HazMat Awareness certifications.
DELAWARE COUNTY TECHNICAL SCHOOLS
STUDENT REGISTRATION PROCEDURES and TIMELINES
In order to provide students with an opportunity for success in the world of work, the following procedures will be followed in the registration of students for the Delaware County Technical Schools:
- Students who indicate a desire to attend the Delaware County Technical Schools will complete an application form, which is available from their home school counselor. Each application form is to be signed by the student’s parent or legal guardian, and the funding district.
- School Counselor will supply supplemental information for each student enrolling at DCTS (report card, transcript; if applicable, IEP, ER, and/or other pertinent information).
- Home school counselors will forward student application forms containing the supplemental information to our Morton Office.
- A committee, led by the Building Administrator, will evaluate all applications in light of the available information provided by the home school. When necessary, conferences will be arranged with the home school counselors, career instructors, and/or parents of the applicants in order to resolve the status of the questionable application. If sufficient openings are not available in the student’s preferences, the student will be informed of openings in other programs.
- Delaware County Technical Schools will protect the security of all confidential student records received from member districts.
