A MESSAGE FROM DR. CARY FOR PARENTS OF MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

May 3, 2017

Dear Parents,

Because the health and welfare of your children are our number one priority, I am writing to bring to your attention a concern that surfaced in recent weeks relative to a Netflix series entitled “13 Reasons Why,” a fictional drama about teenage suicide and depression.

The series was meant to help teenagers have conversations about suicide and depression, but it has caused concern especially because of its potential impact on our most vulnerable students. Some psychologists have suggested that the series is not appropriate for teenagers suffering with depression and have suggested parents watch the series with their children if their children watch it at all. Parents should discuss the content and notice how their children are reacting as they watch the series.

The following links can provide additional information and resources for you.

At school, our counselors are prepared to address the issues around this series should students wish to talk with them. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our school counselors or principals.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carol Cary
Superintendent
