Wellness is a Way of Life!

Since 1946, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has provided nutritional lunches to children in participating schools. In 2004, over 94,600 schools (grades K-12) participated in the NSLP. Any student in these schools can get lunch in the NSLP regardless of the student's household income. Depending on guidelines based on household income and size, eligible students can receive free or reduced-price lunches. In 2004, school cafeterias served over 4.8 billion lunches. The Marple-Newtown School District is happy to participate in the NSLP and will continue to support the School Breakfast Program at Marple Newtown High School.

Click here for an application for the National School Lunch Program. Please complete the forms and return them to school, no later than September 15, 2007. You may also mail it directly to the Marple-Newtown School District, Food Service Department, Suite 207, 42 Media Line Road, Newtown Square, Pa 19073.

The applications will be processed in the order we receive them. You will receive written notification of your child/children’s’ meal eligibility. A new application MUST be completed each year for each household. After September 20, if you have not completed the application, it is your responsibility to ensure your child has 1) meal money or 2) a bagged meal from home.

It was necessary to increase our school meal prices this year due to escalating food and fuel costs. Please note we have not had an increase meal prices since 2004. The prices for the 2007-2008 School Year are as follows: Elementary cost: $2.00; Paxon Hollow Middle School: $2.15 and Marple Newtown High School: $2.35. These prices include an entrée, a grain, fruit and vegetable, and a cold milk choice. These meals provide not only a great value for the cost, but meet the nutritional standards set by the Department of Agriculture. If your child has food allergies, please contact Food Services for further information

USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) administers the NSLP and reimburses participating schools' food service departments for all the meals served to students. To receive reimbursement, the schools must serve lunches that meet minimum nutritional guidelines. These nutritional guidelines include providing one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C. Please review the menu with your child (ren). For your information, the averaged nutrient analysis is included on our elementary menus. This will provide the total calories and percentage of total fat content below the menu items. For families who may wish further information regarding the total grams of carbohydrate within the foods, please contact the Food Service Department directly at (610) 359-4275 or email me at ebellew@mnsd.org. Please support school meals!

Improved nutrition has been a key goal of all modern societies. Sound nutrition frees people to pursue goals that improve the human condition. A healthy and well-nourished population is more productive and is able to focus its energies on the provision of goods and services associated with a highly developed society. It empowers our students to learn. Please make sure you empower your child by encouraging a healthy morning meal. Breakfast is available at the Marple Newtown High School. Please encourage your child to eat, if not at home, with us. Please check your school website for breakfast schedule and cost.

Finally, your household number will appear on your approval/denial letter. Please refer to this number when contacting the Marple-Newtown School District Food Services. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact Food Services at 610-359-4275.
