Legal Implication
of Injury & Illness. . .
Nurses are not licensed
to make medical diagnoses. However, students and families may benefit
from the School Nurse’s knowledge and expertise in assessing the
health care needs of each child. Nurses can advise whether further medical
care may be needed, render first aid, and care for minor illnesses and
injuries occurring during the school day.
The school nurse cannot assume the responsibility of caring for injuries/illnesses
that did not occur at school. Parents should not expect school personnel
to treat such injuries/illnesses. Students are encouraged to participate
in the School Accident Insurance program (see above) which assists in
the health care costs of private physicians and hospitals. The school
district is not responsible for physician fees or other charges connected
with follow-up treatment of injuries or illnesses.
Accident
Insurance . . .
Student accident insurance
is available to cover children during school activities. Application forms
are sent home for each child at the beginning of the school year.
All accidents occurring
at school or during school activities should be reported to the school
nurse. Any specific questions about insurance coverage should be directed
to the principal’s office.
Claim Procedure
1. Obtain a “Notification
of Injury Form” from the school nurse’s office. Have the section
pertaining to the school completed by a school official, or attach a copy
of the Student Accident Report.
2. Complete the parent
section, attach all bills and mail the form to the insurance company within
90 days of accident.
3. Any questions on
claim procedure or claims in process may be referred directly to the insurance
company.
