Paxon Hollow Middle School Clubs & Activities

P.H.A.S.E. (Paxon-Hollow Art Student Entourage) (AKA – Art Club):
Students will participate in activities that will give them a greater skill set, depth of knowledge and a deeper appreciation of the arts and related processes.  PHASE meets Wednesdays, all throughout the school year in the art room.  In order to participate students need to submit 10 black and white drawings - no smaller than 9" x 12" and no larger than 12" x 18" to Mr. Gilleeny or Mrs. Blickle which will be reviewed. This art entourage is designed for serious art students. If any student shows a sincere interest, an aptitude, and a high level of commitment, they will be invited to participate.

Math Counts:
If you like math and would like to practice math problems and play math games please See Mrs. Siegel (room 103) to get involved.  The group meets several times throughout the first half of the year.

Athletic Council:
Is a group of students who help out for athletic events, fundraising, etc. The Council meets Weekly on Wednesdays in Mr. Flood’s Office. Members are selected at the beginning of the year.

The Hollow Log:
Paxon Hollow has a school newspaper called The Hollow Log.  The Hollow Log club allows students to show their creativity by writing articles, drawing pictures, creating puzzles and many other items found in a newspaper.  The Hollow Log meets a couple of times to discuss newspaper items, deadlines on items, and newspaper sales.  At least three issues are published.  The students involved write a letter of commitment to be involved all year in the club, to complete items, and help sell the paper.  The students are expected to create items for the newspaper.  If interested please contact Mrs. Pierlott at the beginning of the year.

Chorus:
Chorus 6th  grade
The group meets in music room 2, on Monday and Tuesday, during homeroom. Performances during the year include winter and spring concerts and Dorney or Hershey park in May.

7th and 8th chorus
The group meets in music room 2 on Thursday and Friday, during homeroom. Performances during the year include winter and spring concerts and Dorney or Hershey park in May.

Mary Anne Hrin runs the Chorus program.  If interested, contact Mrs Hrin in music room 1.

Tiger Tones:
The group meets on Monday and Wednesday after school, 3:00 until 4:00. There are also summertime rehearsals, as well as a spring break rehearsal at Mrs Hrin’s house. Performances throughout the year include: winter day tour to sing at various geriatric centers and community buildings as well as King of Prussia mall, winter and spring concerts, various other trips during the year as well a performances at the Marple Newtown Gala and performances at Dorney or Hershey park in May. F.C.C.L.A.:
Family Career Community Leaders of America is a National non-profit organization that promotes career and community service involvement at the national and local level. The program utilizes resources from the FCS curriculum. Students must commit to a long range project that helps the community.  Meetings are announced in advance, usually a Monday, Wed. or Friday during HR.

Science Olympiad:
Science Olympiad Team members participate in the annual Science Olympiad competition, a one day event held at Cabrini College.  Members select several topics they wish to study in the months leading up to the event.  This may involve taking a written test on a subject (such as Astronomy, Food science), performing various hands-on tests and answering questions (such as Science Crime Busters, Bio-Process Lab), or building something to enter in a competition (tower, bridge, flying plane, robot, etc.)  Students study on their own and time commitments are very flexible.

Color Guard:
Color guard provides students in grades 6, 7 and 8, an opportunity to participate in marching band through visual affects with flags, swing flags, hoops, etc. Color Guard will perform for various events during fall and spring seasons. Practices are twice a week. Students wishing to participate must contact Mrs. Dunleavy

Hand Bells:
Liz Mongan
The ensemble performs in various evening concerts in the spring season.  Members should be able to read music in order to participate.  Please see Mrs. Mongan in music room 3 for more details.

Steel Drum Assembly:
The Paxon Hollow Steel Drum Ensemble is comprised of four groups of eight students.  Each group meets once a week after school from 3:00 – 4:15, in music room 3.  The steel drum ensemble performs at various events in the spring season, including the Paxon Hollow Art Show.  Students also have the opportunity to perform with Delaware Steel, the University of Delaware’s steel drum ensemble.  Membership is open to all and no experience is necessary.  Please see Mrs. Mongan in music room 3 for further details.

Jazz Band:
Jazz band is an audition only ensemble for saxophones, trumpets, trombones, baritones, piano, electric guitar, bass, and drum set.  The ensemble performs in the spring concert.  Please see Mrs. Mongan in music room 3 for further details.

Marching Band & Concert Band:
Paxon Hollow’s Band program consists of a marching band, concert band and wind ensemble.  The beginning and end of the school year is dedicated to marching band. Paxon Hollow performs in community parades in Media and Broomall, as well as the Dorney Park “Live at Dorney” parade.  During the winter, the band performs in a concert setting.  Band meets all year long once or twice a week, depending on the season.  Membership is open to anyone wishing to learn or continue to play a musical instrument.  For more information, please see Mrs. Mongan in music room 3.

Tiger TV:
Tigr-Tv involves a large number of students but does not hold special meetings. You can get started by signing up in 6th grade to be an announcer. You will be called on to do the announcements several times on days you are available. You can sign up again as a 7th or 8th grader to continue as an announcer if you want to and are reliable.  Mr. Hine will usually select several students mainly from experienced announcers or good tech students to be on the TV crew. The crew usually consists of 4 to 5 8th graders and 4 to 5 7th graders. The 8th graders have the control room responsibilities and help train the 7th graders for the following year when they take over. Other positions involve reporting, producing commercials and interviews for viewing on Tigr-Tv. Sign up at the beginning with Mr. Hine.

Talent Show:
Any student can be in the talent show: however, students must first audition to show a panel of teachers that they can actually perform their talent live on stage. Students are then required to attend at least three rehearsals in the auditorium prior to the talent show. See Mrs. Pantel or Mrs. Harper after Nov 1st to get involved.

Student Council:
Student Council is an activity group that is the voice of the student body here at Paxon Hollow. The Council, under the direction of 2 teacher advisors and the elected student officers, run many school events and fund raisers.  In addition, we are involved in community service and many different community programs.  Student Council runs Spirit Weeks, Dodgeball Night, March madness and other school wide activities. Meetings are every Wednesday morning at 7:30 in the auditorium.  Mrs. Harper is head of Student Council

Orchestra:
Orchestra meets twice a week in music room 3.  Membership is open to anyone wishing to play a string, wind or percussive instrument.  The Paxon Hollow orchestra performs various times throughout the school year including an annual trip out of state for a competition.  For further details, please see Mr. McCleary in music room 3.

Drama Club:
Students perform as members of the cast in one of two plays that are performed each year in Feb./Mar.  Stage crew is also an option for students who want to be involved behind the scenes.  Auditions are held in November - Rehearsal are held after school from December to the end of February or early March.. Cindy Landi and Karen Pantle run the Drama Club.

MN Ice Hockey Club:
Paxon Hollow has an A team and a B.  The club runs form October to March at Ice Line. Please contact Mrs. Doyle for more information.

Dance Team:
The dance team is a great way to get involved in Paxon intramurals. There are no tryouts and everyone is welcome to dance. The Dance Team performs in 2-3 events throughout the winter and Spring that include Potter Cup, the Talent show, and other Paxon events. We usually meet twice a week in the mornings to practice. We have a lot of fun creating easy and great dances and all levels of dancers are welcome from beginners to advanced!
