LOCAL STUDENT WINS NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Newtown Square, PA – Alexandra Stulpin, a Marple Newtown High School senior and member of the Marple Newtown High School National Honor Society, has been named a Finalist for a National Honor Society (NHS ä ) scholarship from the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). One hundred and fifty NHS Finalists were chosen from among more than 5,700 applications. Each Finalist will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

Participating high school National Honor Society chapters from across the country nominated two senior high members to compete in this year’s program. Finalists were selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations, clubs and other student groups at school and in the community; and their academic record.

“We are proud to recognize Ms. Stulpin, for her outstanding achievements and contributions to her school.” said Rocco Marano, director, NHS. “Students nominated for the NHS scholarship not only demonstrate academic excellence, but also extraordinary performance in service, leadership, and character – traits that are more important today than ever before. In recognizing leadership and involvement in student activities as well as strong academic performance, the NHS scholarship acknowledges the importance of a well-rounded education. Cocurricular student activities help all students grow and are an essential part of the school curriculum.”

While at Marple Newtown High School, Ms. Stulpin has been National Honor Society vice president, speech team co-captain, a member of the lacrosse and swimming teams, and casting director for the fall play. This fall she plans to attend Penn State University to study History and Pre Law.

The National Honor Society (NHS ä ) is the nation’s premier organization recognizing outstanding high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS ä and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) ä are programs of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Edline Parent Portal Introduced

January 11, 2007 — To support and facilitate partnership in learning, Marple Newtown School District is pleased to introduce the Edline Parent Portal for families of students in grades 6 through 12. Edline is a powerful, easy-to-use, secure communication tool connecting teachers, parents and students. Online access to progress reports, marking period grades, attendance and assignments allows parents, teachers and students to accurately monitor student progress.

Beginning January 12, 2007, Marple Newtown High School will be providing secure online access to a student's progress. A brochure which describes some of the features and capabilities of Edline has been mailed to each student's home.

On Thursday, January 11, 2007, there will be an informational meeting at 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  A demonstration of the Edline format, the activation process, and question and answer session will be held.  Parent activation codes which are necessary to create the parent account will be distributed. In order to maintain proper security, activation codes must be picked up in person. They will begin distributing the activation codes at 7:00 p.m. for those who are not able to stay for the 8:00 p.m. Edline presentation. Handouts will also be made available. Students will receive their own activation codes the following week.

For those who are not able to attend Thursday night’s presentation, the activation code may be picked up, in person, beginning Tuesday, January 16th in the high school guidance office from 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Additional after hour opportunities for parents to pick up their activation codes are being planned. Please refer to the district’s web page, www.mnsd.net, for further information.

Marple Newtown School District welcomes 3 new Administrators.

September 5, 2006 — Ms. Victoria Teti joins Loomis Elementary School as Principal. Ms. Teti is entering her 18 th year in education and comes to us from the West Chester Area School District where she held the position of Assistant Principal at both Fugett Middle School and East High School. She spent 14 years in the Upper Darby School District. She served as Principal at Primos Elementary School, Assistant Principal, Lead Teacher and taught special education at Beverly Hills Middle School.

Ms. Teti received her Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from West Chester University and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from St. Joseph's University.

“I am very excited to be in Marple Newtown.  I am fortunate to have experience at all three levels but I am thrilled to be back in elementary school”, said Ms. Teti.

She enjoys traveling, reading, and is an avid golfer.

Ms. Christine White joins Marple Newtown High School as Assistant Principal. Ms. White comes to us from Upper Darby High School where she was Director of the Freshman Academy and Social Studies Department Head. There, she created Freshman Orientation Day, developed a spirit incentive program and exclusive programming for the freshman at the start of school. Ms. White also taught at the Delaware County Christian School. Ms. White has vast coaching experience in softball and field hockey.

Ms. White received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Secondary Education from Eastern University, and a Masters of Education from Widener.

Ms. White wants to bring an orientation and transition focus to the high school. She is looking forward to working with the faculty, students and administration. “Everything I have done has prepared me for this position”, said Ms. White.

Ms. White was instrumental in the MNHS Freshman Orientation event held on August 23rd. Over ½ of the Class of 2010 came out for this special program. Hosts for the festivities were 25 upper-class Tiger Guides and 50 orange and black clad Faculty and Staff. New students and their parents met key personnel, went on tours of the building, and enjoyed a pizza lunch together.

Ms. Eileen Bellew joins Marple Newtown School District as Director of Food Services. Ms. Bellew comes to us from the Coatesville Area School District where she was Supervisor, Child Nutrition Program, Benner Educational Service Center. Some of her responsibilities included increasing nutritional value of the school meals to comply with USDA federal regulations and evaluating new products to determine student acceptability. Ms. Bellew worked in the Southeast Delco School District as Director of Food & Nutrition Service. She also worked as a nutritionist with the Delaware County WIC Program. Ms. Bellew is a registered dietician.

Ms. Bellew received both her Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics and a Master of Arts in Nutrition Education from Immaculata University.

“With the help of the Wellness Policy, we as a community, become more cognizant of what our children are consuming.  I feel we need to give our students choices and empower them to make good decisions.  Just as students choose to do homework or not do homework, they have the choice to eat a vegetable or not eat a vegetable.  Our job is to help them understand what good choices are. With a positive school environment, good nutrition messages, the help of parents and community, we can encourage them to make the right choices.

Also, I feel that to empower a student, a morning meal must be consumed.  Studies prove a direct correlation between breakfast and good school grades.   Tufts University conducted a study that showed an increase in test scores, less absenteeism, and less visits to the nurse when children ate a morning meal.  I would encourage everyone, including parents, teachers, and staff to eat breakfast.  Set the example!” said Ms. Bellew.

“I am delighted with the enthusiasm our new administrators bring to the district”, said Merle Horowitz, Superintendent of Schools.
