CHARACTER TRAIT FOR MAY: COOPERATION
YOUNG AUTHOR’S DAY is May 14th. On this day, we celebrate the writer in all of us. We announce the students who have been awarded a page in our Young Author’s Book. We honor them along with all of our Russell students who put their words and ideas on paper each day. We invite an author to celebrate with us.
This year, Rick Peoples, who has written poetry books, will be our honored guest. The students get the opportunity to make a connection between what they do in school with the real world. Many students walk away from this special day saying, “I can do that! I’m going to be an author.”
Inspiration, admiration and determination are the feelings that are instilled on Young Author’s Day.
RUSTY’S BOOK CLUB: Rusty’s Book Club is officially underway. The book titles have been announced. Membership cards have been distributed and students are borrowing books. We look forward to the book club discussions that will take place in June. Enjoy the books!
WEEKLY FITNESS FACT:
Tips for Anywhere
- Always use the stairs.
- Carry items (book bags, groceries, etc.) in a manner that maintains proper alignment and helps build strength.
- Encourage everyone to “act out” a story as you read it.
- Have everyone choose a city they want to visit. Add everyone’s pedometer steps together at the end of the day and convert the steps to miles. See how long it takes to get to each city.
- Play upbeat music while you twist and shake through your chores.
- Get off the bus a few stops early and walk.
- Park a distance from the grocery store so you can walk and get more steps on your pedometer.
MAY GATHERING: May’s gathering will be on Tuesday, May 27th @ 3:00 PM. We are very excited to have Mrs. Elizabeth Scott (Alex’s mother) and the PR director from Alex’s Lemonade Stand coming to Russell School and personally accept our school donations that will be collected from the sale of lemonade. Also, if anyone could donate lemonade or paper/plastic cups, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
SAFETY IN THE BUS LANE: When dropping off or picking up your child at school, please do not use the bus lane between 8:30 and 9:00 A.M. or between 3:30 and 4:15 P.M. Cars in the bus lane create a safety issue for our children. You may always park in the lot and walk your child up or drop them off further down and let them walk along the sidewalk. I know especially on rainy days this is inconvenient, but safety is our first priority.
