Updated @ 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 5

Dear MNSD Families,

We are continuing to work through a few outstanding issues with regard to the bus schedules, specifically, adjusting the arrival and drop-off times of each student.  However, due to the BMW Invitational Golf Tournament at Aronimink Golf Club, traffic detours and volume have imposed a significant burden on our ability to establish accurate drop-off times the first week of school.  While we have reached an agreement allowing our buses to access roads that are closed to the public, the issue remains that there is significant volume on surrounding roadways. This heavy traffic is causing our busses to be delayed as they commute from other schools and bus stops.  Unfortunately, we anticipate this situation will likely worsen when the tournament begins play on September 6...

News at MNSD

At the regularly scheduled Board Meeting on June 26, 2018, the Marple Newtown Board of School Directors approved the 2018-2019 General Operating Budget.  This budget included funds for enhancing the district safety and security initiatives with the creation of two  positions.  The new Director of School Safety will be a professionally trained individual who will strengthen district security systems and manage the district safety programs, as well as, security personnel.  This individual, along with the newly created police officer position, will provide an increased level of security presence and response to the existing security team.   The addition of these new personnel in the area of security  are the first of several steps being taken by the district to improve the overall safety of the school district...

Summer Reading Lists 2018

Dear MNSD Families-

The purpose of summer reading this year is to promote student choice. In an effort to support our students’ development of critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, students must be given the opportunity to take ownership of their reading choices. There are suggested titles that provide choice, as well as, opportunity for exposure to interact with texts that will assist in developing their understanding, perspective, and appreciation for the people, places, and ideas that comprise their world.

The MNHS link provides both required titles and the opportunity for choice. Please note that this list also contains titles for all content areas and the related assignments.

The PHMS links include the rubrics which will be used to score the summer reading assignments so students can use them as a guide for completion.

Academic Calendar 2018-2019

Our Academic Calendar for School Year 2018-2019 is on the website (under the header ‘News, Events and Calendar’). It was recommended by district administration and approved last evening at the Regular Board Meeting.

You will notice that the calendar has 183 school days for all students K-12.  Our make-up days are listed in the lower left corner.  It is our intention to use these make-up days in the order listed on the calendar as school closures occur, barring any unanticipated considerations.

The district also has adopted a modified spring break schedule for next year.  After careful consideration, administration recommended this calendar version, which includes a shorter spring break and an earlier year end, because it has several benefits.  These benefits include allowing for more meaningful instructional time and more flexibility in scheduling of PSSA’s, with the goal of improving student achievement and reducing student stress relating to testing.

For example, the calendar allows the district to utilize the days before and after Spring Break for testing, giving the students a rest between testing sessions, and therefore a less stressful testing schedule. Please note that the testing schedule is specific to the individual school as long as it falls within the window from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

An Important Message from Dr. Cary

Very recently, some information has appeared on social media concerning highly disturbing communications and on-line posts apparently made by a now-deceased resident of Hazelton, PA to randomly-targeted and innocent school students and their families throughout the United States, including two families within our District.  This now-deceased Hazelton resident has no other connection with our District.

At the recommendation of the Executive Director of our Delaware County Intermediate Unit, we are sharing with you updated information that she received yesterday afternoon from the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office....

MNSD Email Communications

The Marple Newtown School District employs multiple methods of technology to communicate with its students, families, and community members.  Email has proven to be a highly effective and efficient form of communication for the district however, it has come to our attention that not all our email communications have been received.  This is most likely due to the safeguards that your internet and or email provider has put into place specifically, Anti-SPAM filters.

To ensure the proper and timely delivery of district email messages, we are asking that you “whitelist” or “allow” the mnsd.org domain and donotreply@mnsd.org email address in your email account.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter and helping us serve our community.

March 28, 2018

Dear Parents, Students, and Community,

Please join me in congratulating Mr. John Beltrante as the new principal of Marple Newtown High School effective July 1, 2018. Mr. Beltrante admirably served in this district for the past twenty-two years.

Mr. Beltrante is an educational leader who brings diverse experience to the position. First, he served as a teacher at the high school, then as disciplinarian until he moved to assistant principal at Paxon Hollow.  Following that he became assistant principal at the high school and after a successful tenure of five years, he was selected for the position of principal at Worrall Elementary school.

While at Worrall he received the Keystone Award for Academic Excellence, The Snag in the River Award, and The Title I Distinguished School Award. In 2013, he was part of the Governor’s Award for Marple Newtown High School.

Mr. Beltrante brings not only experience, but a Master’s in Education from Eastern College and a Principal Certification from Immaculata University.  He is very active in the community as a coach, mentor, and father of two sons, Bryce and Austin.

Congratulations to Mr. Beltrante

Carol Cary, Ed. D.

Message from Dr. Cary

March 19, 2018

Dear Parents and Students,

It will be spring in just a few days! The winter will soon be behind us and we can look forward to warmer days ahead. Over the last few months while I was recuperating, I heard of the many good things happening in the district and I was so pleased.

I’d like to thank the School Board, Mr. Joe Driscoll, the cabinet, administrators, teachers, and staff for their efforts during my absence.

I’d like to thank our students for making us proud each day. I was especially proud of our high school students on the day of the Walk for our Lives event.

I wish you a warm spring recess and joyful holidays.

Make-up Days during Spring Break

Dear Marple Newtown Families,

I know that this winter has been difficult for both families and school operations.

As we continue through the month of March, the district must reassess the academic calendar.  Meeting student instructional days is a priority. As indicated on the school calendar, days over spring break will be used for make-up days.

To meet the required 180 days of school set by the state, our schools will be in session on Monday, March 26, Tuesday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 28, 2018. If there are additional school closures, the district will reevaluate the school calendar at that time.

Having the additional days of instruction prior to the PSSA testing is a benefit for students.  We know that this change may effect prior plans for families.  If your child or children will be absent during those three days, please speak with your child’s principal.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.

February 8, 2018 - District Closing

Due to the significant impact the parade in Philadelphia is anticipated to have on our region, the Marple Newtown School District will be closed Thursday, February 8, 2018. We have made this decision after careful consideration, as we believe that this event will have a substantial effect on our normal daily operations.

Currently, there is no change to our school calendar. However, any additional closings in the future due to weather, or other unforeseen circumstances, could require a change to the calendar.

Thank you.

Toy Drive Leaders Holiday Toy Drive Success

This December, Worrall students collected 89 gifts for children residing in temporary housing and homeless shelters.  Worrall students are caring and kind-hearted! They should feel very proud of themselves for helping making the holiday season special for children going through a difficult time this year.  All of the new gifts were donated to the Delaware Community Action Agency for delivery to the children in the shelters.  The toy drive was run by the 5th grade student leaders: Andrew Colonnello, Courtney DiPersia, Erin Brangiel, Chase Evans, Allison Collins, and Daniel Lannon.  The student leaders created a flier, made announcements, and counted and collected the gifts to ensure that the toy drive was a success.  Congratulations Worrall School!
